Jain Community felt the need for education in Baraut and the adjoining areas, so they initiated their efforts by starting a primary school on 20th January 1916. With their continuous efforts and discipline, the primary school achieved another milestone for higher education and hence Digambar Jain Degree College came into existence by getting affiliation from Agra University on 21st January 1947 for UG Courses and later for PG Courses. At present it is affiliated to Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. It would not be an exaggeration to state that the College was the culmination of the founders’ practical wisdom and painstaking effort to meet the long-standing aspirations of the traditional background populace of Baraut, for academic upliftment, cultural enrichment and economic advancement. Located on an impressive campus in the heart of a small town, the institution, throughout the history of its existence, has been striving for the emancipation of these masses through the lofty means of education, and can take genuine pride in the fair level of success it has achieved in this direction.

The College is situated on Gandhi Road near Head Post Office. The railway station and bus depot of Baraut are within one kilometre of the college. The College is affiliated to Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut and its catchment areas are Delhi, Ghaziabad, Shahdra, Loni, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar and Baghpat.

The institution could make rapid strides on a steady course of diversified expansion in terms of buildings and facilities, the spectrum of courses offered and academic and extra-academic intervention has been tremendously augmented. Besides the space earmarked for tutorial and administrative purposes, the institution also offers facilities such as an Auditorium situated in C-field, Gymnasium, a canteen, Bhagwan Mahaveer Hall, a girls’ room, a staff room, a reading room, a Computer lab, Smart classrooms, Professors’ colony and much more.

The academic environment of the campus is enriched by a good number of faculty strength and a student-intake capacity of more than 3000. Fourteen Departments viz., Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Geography, History, Psychology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Political Science, Commerce and Education (B.Ed.). have research centres with Undergraduate and Post-graduate courses in 11 disciplines viz. Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Geography, History, Psychology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Commerce and Under Graduate courses offered in 6 disciplines viz. Statistics, Drawing and Painting, Political Science Physical Education and Education (B.Ed.).

The College has a rich and well-maintained Central library and well-equipped laboratories in the practical departments for study and research purposes. Also, small departmental libraries have been maintained to access the information at hand. The College has four manual generators and one silent automatic generator which provides 24-hour power backup. All the departments of the College have inverter facilities also. Besides quality teaching and research, the College provides adequate facilities for co-curricular activities and extracurricular activities for the all-round development of students. There are various societies and committees to foster a spirit of competition and desire to excel among the students. The National Service Scheme (NSS) provides opportunities to students for extension work, social work and community service. The National Cadet Corps (NCC), and Rovers Rangers (RRS) are other avenues for intellectual and cultural engagements.

The Physical Education department of the College is also very active in imparting a culture of physical excellence and well-being to the students The Physical Education department arranges games and sports on-campus and off-campus. College sports teams have participated in sports events at University, State, National and International levels and won an appreciable number of medals and trophies.

The College seeks to promote ideals of cooperation, tolerance, humanism, nationalism and patriotism among all students. The College also makes its contribution as an examination centre for neighbouring self-finance Colleges and State Level Entrance Examinations.

The main objective of the College is to contribute to the transformation of prevailing social conditions by educating the youth belonging to all sections of society so that the value enshrined in the Constitution of India such as social justice, equality, democratic freedom to all and the tolerance and respect for all religions may be brought closer to realization and prove an asset for the building of the Nation. The founders of the institution believed that the country can lead on all fronts if the young minds are imparted quality education sensitizing them about their social responsibilities College thrust not only in classroom studies but also seeks active participation of the students in the extra-curricular activities during their education.

Presently, the institution is very much aware that the dimensions and quality of education should keep on changing with time. The quality cannot be assessed by a single yardstick, such as classroom teaching, rather it can be monitored through the change in National and global trends in various walks of life. It is important for any centre of higher education to know that service lies in imparting that kind of education which may inculcate moral values and motivate young minds towards research for the future not only for our country but for the entire world. Another important aspect of education in today’s times is to develop the soft skills of the students in order to make them competitive in the employment market. The College has always believed that success can only be achieved by excellence in all fields of knowledge. The College always strives for betterment with each passing day.
